The 'City of Caves ', is located on an island in the Sea of Oman close to Mumbai ( Bombay ) in the state of Maharashtra. Regular ferryboats leave from Mumbai's Gateway of India throughout the year, excepting the monsoon months. It has been declared a World Heritage Monument.

Elephanta caves are known as the glorious place abode of Lord Shiva. Its consists of seven caves and the most notable one is the Mahesa-murti cave. It has a very impressive size with the main body of 27 meters square supported by rows of six columns each.

This cave with images from Hindu mythology has found one of its most perfect expressions, particularly the huge high relief's in the main cave.
